Further Medical Questions

Can I fly if I have influenza or an infectious condition?

You can fly as long as you do not have an infectious disease. If you are suffering from a pressure equalisation disorder caused by an infection in the ear, nose and throat area, however, then your health is at risk from air travel. If you suffer swelling with pressure equalisation disorders caused by an infection during the flight, detumescent medication will help prevent or alleviate the problem.

Can I fly if I have asthma?

With asthma you will need to undergo a medical examination and discuss your condition in detail with your doctor for its treatment before boarding the flight.

Do you have a mild form of chronic obstructive bronchitis or asthma?
If these conditions

  • do not cause seizures, and
  • are being treated successfully with patient's own medication, and
  • the doctor responsible for treatment of the condition does not feel it is necessary for you to receive additional oxygen during the flight,

then you may fly without clearance from the medical service of Austrian Airlines.

In all other cases, please obtain flight clearance via the Special Cases Desk of Austrian Airlines. To do this you will need the medical information form - please click here  to receive detailed information about obtaining medical clearance.

If you require additional oxygen while on board, please advise us of this when making your reservation. You are responsible for bearing the cost of this.

What do I need to take into account if I suffer from diabetes?

Your special dietary needs as a diabetic will be met on all flights in Business Class, and on flights lasting 2 hours 30 minutes or longer in Economy Class.

Sole precondition: you need to inform us of your special dietary request at least 24 hours before departure.

Can I fly if I have a pacemaker?

Yes - in principle. We do recommend, however, that you agree this with your doctor before taking the flight. Please carry your pacemaker certificate with you at all times.

What should I take into consideration if I have a weak heart/have suffered a heart attack?

In case of heart problems, you must always submit yourself for a medical examination and discuss the situation in detail with your doctor before flying.

Provided that

  • the heart attack took place several weeks previously without any additional complications, and
  • the cardiologist responsible for treating the condition has no concerns,

you will not require flight clearance from the medical service of Austrian Airlines.
Any further questions? Please write us at specialcases@austrian.com

You will need to obtain flight clearance in all other cases. For this purpose please use the medical information form. Please click here  to receive detailed information on obtaining medical clearance.

If you require additional oxygen while on board, please advise us this when making your reservation. You are responsible for bearing the cost of this.

Is medical clarification necessary if I have sleep apnoea?

Yes. You will require medical clarification before flying if you suffer from sleep apnoea.

What do I need to take into consideration if I want to travel by air with my leg in plaster?

Please clarify with your doctor whether any preventative action will need to be taken to guard against thrombosis.

For plasters that

  • reach up to knee, medical clarification is not necessary. Despite this, we ask that you advise the office processing your booking of the situation.
  • reach above the knee, you will require clarification from the medical service of Austrian Airlines - for detailed information please click here
What are the risk factors with thrombosis?

During a long-haul flight, our veins are subjected to greater levels of strain due to the fact that we remain in a sedentary position for extended periods of time. This can sometimes mean that fluid is not being transported back to the heart in sufficient quantities. The condition appears as a swelling of the legs.

The risk factor of thrombosis depends on many different factors. The risk increases substantially with age. Please keep moving as much as possible during a long-haul flight - this minimises the risk of thrombosis.  If you believe you may be a risk, please be sure to speak to your doctor.
