The current Flightbook, “Hungary,” invites the reader to a pleasurable ramble through the deep soul and dry humour of our neighbour Hungary. As well as a deep-seated self-irony – “when Hungarians can no longer tell jokes, it will be the
end of them” – this involves soup recipes; Hungary offers more than just goulash and paprika, and without soups they don’t even sit down to dinner.

The Flightbook Hungary is illustrated by artist Ágnes Szépfalvi, whose figurative oil paintings are influenced by photography and film. In her paintings, which have the effect of slowmotion stills from films, the central focus is usually on women in traditional and popular roles. In Szépfalvi’s world, the observer often becomes a voyeur of the deep-seated tensions between men and women.
